Laser-diode-based Amplifier Suits Satellite Laser Ranging

Instead of using an expensive modelocked Nd:YAG laser as the seed source, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD) and American University (Washington, DC) scientists used commercially available laser diodes to build a small-footprint regenerative amplifier suited for ground-based satellite laser-ranging applications.

With a goal of creating 1 mJ of 532 nm light at a 2 kHz repetition rate with pulsewidths of less than 200 ps, the setup begins with a 1064 nm narrowband laser diode driven in short-pulse mode (0.2–0.4 ns seed pulsewidths). The input enters the amplifier gain unit consisting of two Brewster-cut Nd:YAG laser slabs oriented 90º to each other to simplify optical correction and create a symmetrical thermal lens effect and each pumped with an 808 nm laser-diode array. Laser-diode temporal seeding allows pulse energy to build on successive passes through the amplifier until cavity gains and losses equalize, creating 2.1 W (82 dB gain) of 532 nm light after passing through a lithium niobate crystal. Unlike commercial amplifier systems, the laser-diode seed pulses allow the pulse shape to be customized and stay unaffected by cavity length or amplifier gain. Finally, the laser-diode-based configuration can produce adjustable pulsewidths through the addition of multiple seed diodes coupled into low-cost fiber-optic combiners

Taiwan Tablet Panel Makers See Low Order Visibility as Competition Intensifies

Tablet panel makers in Taiwan currently have low order visibility due to less-than-expected sales of tablets as well as to increased competition from other panel makers.
The makers believe the tablet panel segment has brought in a steady business but is increasingly hard to compete in as more panel makers, most of which are from China, are expanding their production capacity and forming more integrated supply chains with local vendors.
China-based BOE is one major panel maker that is taking such actions and is also beating out Taiwan makers in terms of pricing for both tablet and PC panels, causing orders to be shifted away from Taiwna makers.
As global demand for high-end tablets has recently been stagnant and white-box unit orders are increasingly being shifted to China makers, tablet panel makers in Taiwan currently face low order visibility.
Additionally, major tablet vendors also have had issues clearing their reserves recently and may need until the fourth quarter before putting in new orders.

China Panel Makers Maintain Strong Performances in The TFT LCD Segment

BOE saw its operating margin for its 5G line reach over 20% in the first half of 2013 as it focused on handset and tablet panel production while minimizing equipment costs, according to Digitimes Research.
Due to the good results BOE is seeing from handset and tablet panel production, the company has plans to transfer medium- to large-size production on its 6G line to produce mostly handset panels.
Additionally, Digitimes Research said China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) maintained high production utilization during the first half while limiting the number of different panel sizes it produces. These methods helped the company maintain higher profits than BOE and a better operating margin than LG Display's large-size LCD business.
